What's the difference between a home and commercial lift?
While the first thing you'll notice will be the size, commercial lifts are subject to a different range of compliance standards than home lifts here in Australia. See more about the standards below, but don' fret, we're here to navigate you through them to make sure you building stays fully within code.
AS1735
Australian Standard
AS1735 is the Australian Standard for lifts, escalators, and moving walks, providing comprehensive guidelines to ensure safety, reliability, and performance in the design, installation, and maintenance of these systems. It covers a wide range of lift types, including passenger, goods, and service lifts, as well as escalators and moving walkways. The standard establishes detailed requirements to ensure safe operation, encompassing mechanical and electrical systems, emergency provisions, fire safety, and backup power. AS1735 mandates rigorous design and installation protocols to ensure that lifts and escalators meet safety criteria, protecting both users and maintenance personnel.

National Construction Code
NCC E3.6 addresses the design and construction of stairways, ramps, and barriers in Commercial buildings. It sets out the requirements for safe access and movement within buildings, including minimum dimensions, handrails, slip resistance, and load-bearing capabilities. The provisions ensure that stairways, ramps, and barriers are constructed to reduce risks of accidents, such as falls, and to provide safe, accessible paths of travel for residents. Compliance with NCC 3.6 is essential for builders and developers to meet national safety and accessibility standards in Australian homes and Commercial structures.
